Painter Rendered with Marmoset Toolbag Liminal Space - “A state or place characterized by being transitional or intermediate in some way” This is what I was thinking about when I created this piece. It was when I was exposed to the idea of “liminal Space”. I started this right around the middle of 2020. AKA“LockDown 2020”. Covid just started in February and was spiraling out of control, the world was experiencing a “once in a generation” health crisis that really was not prepared for. People were dying by the hundreds per day. At the time I was living in San Fransisco. The whole situation was surreal. Many businesses were shut down, people were adviced to stay indoors. The streets were empty. It was quite unreal. My job at the time was uncertain. So I started this project with all this in my mind.&nbsp;So like the name itself, the project ended up kinda in limbo between 2020 to end of 2022. I went back to work on it here and there between those times. Towards the end of 2022, I found myself back in that liminal space and frame of mind. At first, it was just to see if I don’t reach out, will they reach out to me? So a day went by, then few days, then a week, and then a month.&nbsp; Eventually I’ve come to terms that it seems like it did not matter if I was around or not. I wanted to reach out, wanted to ask. But as it comes to realization that they seem to be content of my absent, it does hurt. As I think back, how do I convince someone that views me as the villain of their story? No matter what I do, they see it as alterior motives. Eventually I have to accept that and move on. But even as I try to move on, everything becomes numb. Days and nights just blend together. Avoided pretty much all of social media and isolated myself. Staying at home staring at the walls. I was afraid that when I step outside I would only reminded of how it was and how it could’ve been. But even that could just be one sided and that nothing was real. So many times I wanted to reach out “Hey, Happy Thanksgiving!”“Hey, Merry Christmas!”“Hey, it’s pretty cold lately. How you doing?”“Hey, how you been?” “Hey....” But at the end I didn’t. Seems like that the solution is to take myself out of the equation. Since the other side is fine without me. Not one word. So I found myself back to finish this project. Since it felt fitting that I am once again back to that liminal space, back to La Nimil. Back to that counter, waiting for that someone that would never come. Sipping on that tea for one. I still remember the first time I played Contra on the NES and doing the code to get extra lives, to sneaking to the back of my mom’s restaurant and played with the fangled Atari 2600. Remembering the time where I standed in line overnight for the release of the PS2 console release. Those are some of my favorite memories that video games have weaved itself into part of my life.&nbsp; In my time in high school, my friends and I would love to go to the local bowling alley to play pool. In that pool hall there’s a small collection of old arcades there. I would spend many of quarters into the SNK multi arcade unit. One of the games that I loved playing was the Metal Slug series on it. I loved how much character that game has, especially the SV-001 tank. The art direction and animation of the entire game was just filled to the brim with character. So with this I was imagining how it’ll look with modern 3D flair. I still feel that there’s a certain charm that pixel art brings that can’t really be replicated in 3D hahaha. I had a test case where we were trying to show off a stereoscopic effect. So for this particular test I decided to create this sashimi dish as a good way to show off the effects. I went on a search to see what is a good subject that can be used to show the effects while at the same time interesting. After some searching and brainstorming, I’ve decided that a good candidate that I can use would be sashimi set. I’ve always loved culinary plating presentations. It’s a temporary artform that wets your appetite and at the same time feel guilty for consuming it.When it comes to plating presentations, on the top of my list has to be Japanese food. The way that it combines something very rich in history with a modern elegance. Especially considering that the history of sushi was considered something of a fast food in the past. Where it’s a way to grab a quick bit with both fish and rice, chomp it down and head out. To now where it’s an art form that is meant to be slowed down and take in the complete experience of the five senses. So I looked online for inspirations and I came across this sashimi set that was from Kazahana of Tokyo that I found just beautiful. From there I used that dish as a guide for me to setup this dish. I felt that with this dish, it is a good candidate for showing the stereoscopic effect with it’s different layers of food prensentation. With the column of the beef tar tar that acts as a pillar that breaks up the background and forground. This one is dedicated to another previous love. Seems like I have a theme of self punishment here since each of these piece hurts the entire time that I work on it. This time I wanted to experiment with a different art style. So I decided to go with a painted feel. With the topic of afternoon milk tea, I felt that it will give a sense of warmth and soft feel that reminds me of her. Also that this gives a mood of just a peaceful afternoon enjoying some afternoon tea. This was also done when Hong Kong is in a state of turmoil, this scene gives a sense of sernity that I hope will be a prediction of it’s future. The theme I’m going for was a futuristic sports car livary that has a hint of organic element to it with inspiration of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. I also envisioned a future where Heads Up Display elements from video games will make it’s way into real life automotive tech. The idea of using screen displays in place of your infotainment center is a great step forward from your traditional single or double din car stereo head unit. But I felt that even with it placed higher in the dashboard, I still feel that it’s still very unsafe and a distraction from the driver. So in this concept I have the important informations could be directly be placed in front of the driver without the need of taking their eyes off the road. With the GPS assist navigation map in the center lower part of the window, and other elements such as turn by turn, speed, etc... in the front around the driver’s field of vision. It would make the driving experience less complicated. He was in production of remastering movies that his father, Mr. Michael Hui&nbsp; and his brothers, created during what could be considered the “golden era” of Hong Kong comedy movies during the 80s and would like to have me create a dvd cover for the blu-ray collection release. He was very generous and did not set any boundries on what direction to take it. With the theme of the project is to honor and celebrate his father’s work that had been held dear in the Hong Kong cinematic history, I decided that I would use the name and sign of the restaurant “Old Hui Cafe” in the movie “Chicken and Duck Talk” as the main subject of the cover. I felt that by having this sign as a standalone subject was that the name of restaurant “Old Hui Cafe” was a very well known cultural reference to this movie. Another reason why was because of the neon sign. It gave a very unique and distinct trademark of the neon filled sign streets of Hong Kong during the 80’s. Even thou my childhood memories of Hong Kong during the 80’s was hazy. Some of my most vivid imageries were the night time bus rides with my parents down Mong Kok. Especially during some of those summer rainy nights. The techno colors of the street lit up the night sky. for her new single that’s releasing soon. So the idea of having a lyrics only music video came up that’s to be release coincide with the release party. The concept was to be very simple style with just a white background with a disc spinning like a vinyl record with the lyrics displayed on the other side. I felt that with the theme of the song talking about the pain that one suffers without displaying it to the world, I wanted the font type to be square, strong, with bold straight strokes to compliment the strong lyrics. The whole process took about 4 days from start to finish. I’m hoping that I did justice to conveying the emotional impact of each lyric sung by Ms. Joyce Cheng in a visual manner.&nbsp;
